29 May 2008 Handyman Magazine June 2008 Issue

Early this year I was asked to shoot for the Readers Digest publication, Handyman Magazine. It was a great experience and really challenged me to work outside of my comfort zone. The Editor, Lee Dashiel was great to work with and Vivienne's (The talent agency) were incredibly helpful in sourcing a burly, handyman type for the shoot.

16 April 2008 Philadelphia Photomedia Center Insight Magazine

Last year Eric Grignol of the Philadelphia Photomedia Center in Erie, PA asked me if I'd like to contribute to the in-house publication Insight. My part in the publication received this write up in the Erie online entertainment site goerie.com:

"While technical proficiency is unmistakable in the works of all the artists, it is perhaps Australian Kate O'Brien who has most overtly married procedural expertise with her artistic vision.

The main weapon in her arsenal is what she calls "digital vintaging" -- a method of simulating with computer effects the characteristics of age, such as scratches and dirt, on a recent photograph. O'Brien then references the romanticism of the Victorian-era portrait while the elements within the frame place her work squarely in the 21st century in her series "Eye Candy for the Broken Hearted."

Exercises such as these not only tease us with what is and what might be, they should serve as a reminder that digital photography is now as malleable a medium as clay or paint."

II was surprised and delighted when several copies turned up in my mailbox for me to distribute. Please drop me a line if you'd like one!

22 March 2008 Claire Whiting

I've been busy with lots of interesting and challenging shoots with some truly talented people, such as the Brisbane indie songbird, Claire Whiting. Some big projects in the works, lips zipped for now though.

12 March 2008 The John Steel Singers

Just polished the edges on the new John Steel Singers promo photos. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this band are destined for great things. I was grateful to be a part of their rise to superstardom!

1 January 2008 Year in Review

2007 has been an interesting and eventful year. I flew down to Sydney mid-year to photograph upcoming band, Chasing Gravity which was quite the experience. I worked with Lizza Gebilagin, editor of Corker Magazine for their inaugural issue, I did a marathon shoot for the girls at KittyCatBlack.com of their necklace and corset lines and last but certainly not least I photographed Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls with the amazing Danger Ensemble.

I eagerly look forward to 2008 with plans in the pipeline to have another exhibition of my recent work and start work on a coffee table book. I am shooting a very cool wedding in April (something I never usually do) but the theme of this wedding has tickled my fancy and I'm rather looking forward to it.

I'll be working with some more big names throughout the year and look forward to making several exciting upgrades to the studio.

Big shoot in August down in Sydney. More details soonish.

09 April 2007 Just can't leave it alone

So I got bored with the site design yet again.
